I am so excited about this unit because it is Common Core created but totally Black History Month at the same time! With so many things to teach and time always such an issue in the classroom, it's a great way to combine social studies lessons as well as reading and writing skills. Plus, I think the material will be interesting and motivating for your kids!

I really like the worksheets included. They describe so many important lives and explain the role each one played in history. These are stories that all children should know and can benefit from.

There are two computer activities included. The Make a Timeline Activity is great to help students determine important information about a notable African American, while helping them practice computer skills like website navigation, cut and paste and more! The Black History Webquest is good for teaching kids to scan for important information. The two-sided handout asks the kids to search a website to find simple information about black icons.

Poetry is always a great way to incorporate writing throughout the year. The parts of speech poem is a nice culminating activity, if you do a full research report in your classroom, or they can also be used after completing one or more of the biographies from this set. Nice way to reinforce learning and I think they would make an awesome bulletin board too!

If you do Interactive Notebooks, the four foldables might be interesting to you. Two of them are about the different people who are included in this literacy set (could be a review activity) and the third one is blank so your students can add any names or events that you would like. The fourth one is about important vocabulary/concepts related to Black History. These are difficult concepts that could start a really good discussion in your classroom.

I hope you really like this literacy set and that it is something that will work well in your classroom, as it has in mine.
