This four to five week unit plan focuses on Biographies. It starts with a mini-lesson on biographies and autobiographies, and then invites students to write a biography, including illustrations, of their own about a prominent figure in American black history. The goal is to celebrate Black History Month, understand the genre of biography, practice writing mechanics, conduct research, learn history, grasp the elements of story-writing, and illustrate an understanding of literary elements. This activity does not have to be during Black History Month, but seems to work well this month, and the students always enjoy it. The unit can be modified to include any list of prominent figures in the world.
