Why You Need This Product:

Make Black History Month come to life for your students with these fun and fresh activities to celebrate and research the lives of 13 famous African American women. If you want your students to go beyond the facts and think deeply about the famous African Americans they are learning about during Black History Month, or any time of year, then this is the product for you. The unique and fun activities require students to think deeply about the Famous African Americans they are researching. Students must apply the information they learn to demonstrate understanding of the traits of each person and how she overcame obstacles and demonstrated persistence to accomplish great things.

What this product includes:

Each of the famous African Americans has 7 creative and fun activities to complete. You just pick the ones you want them to do, or better yet, let the students select the ones to complete! Please look at the preview to see the seven activities. The 7 activities are customized for each person. This unit does not include any biographies of the individuals. You will need to supply picture books and/or other informational text for them to use for their research.

Cover Page – this contains a picture and a quote. The quote on each page is a great discussion starter about what it means, and how it applies to our lives today.

Just the Facts – After researching their famous African American, students write the most important facts or observations about the person.

Character Map graphic organizer I love this graphic organizer! Students could actually write a short biography about their famous person just from the information on this organizer. This organizer is probably most appropriate for grades 3-5, but you could adapt it for primary grades.

The Important Thing - The pattern of the book is perfect for teaching main ideas and supporting details. I even use this simple format with 5th graders who have not had much experience with writing. I love having each student take a different person and putting all the pages together to create a The Important Book: Famous African Americans book for the entire class!

Character foldable with a bio poem on the inside. This is a shutter foldable with a picture of the person on the outside and an I Am Poem on the inside. The outside of the shutter represents what you see when you look at the person, but the inside represents the things about him/her you cannot see just by looking at him/her. I love to put these up on a bulletin board. They look so cute! There are two different versions of the I Am Poem for you to select depending on the level of your students.

I’ve Got to Hand It To You! – I love this activity! Students color the hand and picture of the famous person and write 5 accomplishments or character traits on the fingers of a hand. I like to cut them out and display on a bulletin board.

If I were to give my famous person a gift activity – This is another foldable type activity. Students have to justify why they selected the gift and why it is an important gift for their person.

** Marian Anderson – famous singer
** Ruby Bridges – famous Civil Rights Leader
