- Did you know that every US President since 1976 has recognized February as Black History Month? That's just one of the neat facts about Black History and the Road to Civil Rights in the United States that is covered in this 'time line type' informational writing.
Although this is perfect to use in February for Black History Month (also known as African American History Month), it is also great to use when studying Martin Luther King, Jr. in January because it mentions him twice. In addition, it can be used any time during the year when studying the history of civil rights.
I call it a 'time line type' informational writing because it isn't really a passage, and it isn't just a time line. Students follow the arrows around the paper to learn the dates and brief descriptions of interesting historical events in black history. All of the events make up the road to civil rights.
Please note that not every important event dealing with black history is included.
This is one page that has many events. Here are a few that are mentioned:
• beginning and end of Civil War
• 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments
• Plessy vs. Ferguson case
• Jim Crow Laws
• NAACP formation
• Brown vs. Board of Education
• March on Washington
• LOTS MORE!

Perfect for Interactive Notebooks, too! Here is how......
There are a couple of options for how to use this informational sheet. You can simply pass it out, read as a class, and discuss
or you can copy the informational sheet on the front and on the back copy the cover page, which will make a brochure that can easily be glued in an interactive notebook. If you choose this option, there are also 2 reflection questions for students to write about.
or you can feel free to use it in your classroom however you see fit! :-)
Need an additional activity? As an extension activity, you could easily have students take the dates given and create a time line.
PLEASE NOTE------ This pack does not include any questions other than the 2 that go with the brochure choice mentioned above. I want to be clear on that so no one is disappointed and thinking it has a bunch of written questions.
Please..... If you notice any typos, please let me know before you rate the product, as I can usually have them corrected in a jiffy and ready for you to redownload. Thank you so much!
