Product Description
Are you looking for a meaningful Black History Month activity that will not only let your students have fun and show their creativity, but also requires them to conduct research and think critically? Look no further than the Black History Month Banners: Mini Research Project! This project contains over 30 pages on instructional materials that will help guide teachers and students through this activity. Students will LOVE that they get to learn more about an influential African American man or woman in the United States and get to create a small project instead of writing an essay. Teachers will LOVE that they have a resource that requires little prep and includes EDITABLE templates that allow them to create their own directions, project requirements, and add their own images. Another bonus for teachers is that this product contains a detailed rubric, strong and weak teacher models as well as pictures of the project in action, and a list of suggested websites that students can use for research.

The following materials are included in this product:

Black History Month Banners Research Handouts: The research handouts contain the assignment, a suggested list of websites that students can use to research, and a short brainstorming activity that is designed to help students decide who they want to research. After students have selected their person, they will create a list of 5-6 self-generated questions that they have about their person that will help guide them during their research. There is also space for them to record the information that they find about the person.

Grading Rubric: There are two versions of a detailed rubric that can be used to grade this project. The rubric focuses on these four attributes: focus/purpose, content, organization, and presentation/appearance of banner. One rubric contains a point value assigned to each column and the other rubric does not assign a point value. This allows you to determine how much each part of the project is weighted.

7 Pre-designed and EDITABLE templates with DIRECTIONS: Banners offer you a variety of options for this project and ways that you can customize the requirements for the banner to better fit the needs of your students. The fully completed banner includes room for a photo, a Words of Wisdom section that students will write a quote from their person, and a "Did You Know?" section where they will list 5-6 pieces of information that they have learned about the person they researched.

7 Pre-designed and EDITABLE templates WITHOUT DIRECTIONS: Banners offer you a variety of options for this project and ways that you can customize the requirements for the banner to better fit the needs of your students. The fully completed banner includes room for a photo, a Words of Wisdom section that students will write a quote from their person, and a "Did You Know?" section where they will list 5-6 pieces of information that they have learned about the person they researched.
•••(EDITABLE means that you can add text or images to the templates in PP. In addition, you can add your own directions for the banners to better suit the needs of your classroom)•••

Teacher Models: Strong and Weak Samples are included so that students can see what the expectations are and can self-assess their own project. Models are based on Frederick Douglass and Thurgood Marshall.

Teacher Models- Blank Templates to Create Your Own Models: There are also two blank templates for John Lewis and Coretta Scott King that you can use to create your own models to show your students your expectations or personal requirements for this project.
