Description
Celebrate Blàck History month! Easy prep for the teacher-- copy, cue up links and go! This book of 14 biographies are focused on Audra McDonald, Denzel Washington( actor and director), Viola Davis (new EGOT winner) , Billy Porter, Cynthia Erivo (actress, singer and composer), Ben Vereen, James Earl Jones, Debbie Allen(actress and choreographer) , Daveed Diggs, Renee Goldsberry, August Wilson (playwright) James Monroe Iglehart, Fatima Robinson and Camille A. Brown (choreographers) --Broadway Tony award nominees and winners. Also included are 14 teacher keys, 50 video clips, a teacher’s script, one pager template, etc.)
This is formatted in an e-book form. The questions are in the front with the keys after. (This used to be a big bundle that I reworked to create a more useful and less expensive product.) Stay tuned--there will be more of these in the near future!
I created this product because my students were interested in people of other cultures who were successful theatre artists as well as they were looking to find artists like themselves.
The students research questions about the artists' lives, journey to Broadway, various accolades and study their growth mindset. Finally, using a One Pager assignment, the student designs the lives of the artists and shares it with their classmates. Students finish the lesson by processing with one another.
Perhaps more students would pursue a career in the theater arts if we show them what is possible for them?
These bios. are a great spring board for discussion concerning goals, tenacity, determination and professionalism.
Note: Although Ms. Erivo is originally from England, Black history month is unofficially celebrated there as well.
HOW DO I USE THIS LESSONS IN MY CLASSROOM? If I were you, I'd either assign the different artists to my students or give them a choice which they'd prefer researching. Or they tie it to my lesson concerning the Tony Awards at: Tony Awards Lesson
Teachers also assign these artists and have the students make short reports on them using the One Pager as their visual aid.
There is more to theater than just improvisation, plays and games. I teach theater with a twist. This is an example of what I mean.
The product includes:
- Letter to teacher explaining the lesson (lesson is about 60 to 90 minutes in length)
- One-pager template for assignment

- Denzel Washington newspaper biography
PLUS
- 14 sets of theater artist questions
