Informational Reading: Using Black History Month information to learn about important historical people while practicing Common Core Standards.
I used the text, Let It Shine by Andrea Davis Pinkney, (this is a fabulous book with stories of black women freedom fighters) for this activity, but the materials in this activity could be used with any informational biography.
Several of these questions can have lengthy answers. Because of that, you may want to assign one, a few, or all of the questions. This is depending on how you want to use this activity.
Since each child won’t have a copy of the book, this could be used in a literature center.
Another option would be to read one or more of the biographies aloud to the class, then display an illustration onto a screen for the entire class to see in order to answer the questions relating to the illustrations.
I have included both thin questions and higher level thinking thick questions for your students to answer.
I hope you enjoy learning about these amazing women!
