A break-in activity that helps familiarize students with 15 African Americans whose achievements and involvement in our nation's history are inspiring and encouraging. Students will answer rhyming clues for each civil rights leader, followed by a brief description of each one and their accomplishments. As they complete a graphic organizer, students use the names to decode a final message, meant to encourage and inspire them to think about how to make their world a better place. Perfect for gifted or advanced students in elementary schools (or give them a word bank) and absolutely great as a fun Black History Month activity for any middle or high school classroom.
You will need some kind of device that can connect to a google form in order to do this activity. The 30 minute time-frame is my estimate of how long it would take my students in a 7th grade classroom. Prior knowledge, extra teacher hints, and student level will all have a significant impact on the time this activity takes.
