Perfect for Black History Month or Women's History Month! Also perfect for encouraging your students to be all they can be.
“Letters to Mae” is a 6 to 10 session mini-unit on the inspirational story of Mae Jemison, the first African-American woman to be an astronaut.
I developed this unit because I have seen my own students absorb and make meaning of history by making personal connections to the events and figures that we study. The activities in “Letters to Mae” are ones that my students have particularly enjoyed each year.
Included in this resource:
Teacher directions for a six to ten session sequence.
Posters and directions for a small group activity.
Templates and samples for poetry writing and friendly letter writing.
Article and response pages for a Close Read about Mae Jemison.
Template for a silhouette craftivity.
Suggestions for other resources to support learning and understanding.
“Letters to Mae” would make a great addition to your lesson plans for Black History Month, or a stand-alone mini-unit connected to your reading and writing standards. You may even want to print all materials and directions and place the unit in your emergency sub tub!
Wishing you and your students an even better understanding of the events that have shaped the American nation’s history, and a clear view of what we as a nation must do to pave the road to the future.
