A complete 2-4 week project (depending upon how much time you want to devote to each section) that asks middle and high-school aged students to learn about an important or influential African-American, create a 5-paragraph informational essay about that person, and present a 3-mintute speech/oral presentation about what they have learned.
The managed choice aspect of this assignment allows students to branch out in their learning - discovering important African-Americans they may not have previously known about.
