Product Description
These passages are all about Black History Greats that your youngest of readers will love to learn about! They are written with students with early reading skills in mind... The passages are written with plenty of sight words, CVC words, and new vocabulary!

Included are 12 passages, each with 5 lines of text. They are written at a level of difficulty perfect for Kinders and Firsties; they will have repeated success with the sight and CVC words while being challenged with new vocabulary. The new vocabulary is highlighted at the bottom of the passage with an "I Can" statement and picture prompt.

Another highlight of each printable is they also have a comprehension section. Students are asked two "right there" questions, one of which asks the students to repeat (write) the name of the Black History Great which will help them to focus more on who they are learning about.

The next section has close writing skills in which the students underline the title, reinforcing text features. Following are two more close reading questions students must underline with a color when finding their answer.

To help differentiate amongst your students, there is another set of the same printables with text dots under each word. This will help your readers that need more support, while they touch each dot while reading. The dots are white as opposed to black, which can be overpowering and distracting. The white dots can also be colored in while reading.

The Black History Greats included are:
Benjamin Banneker
Michael Jordan
Michael Jackson
Martin Luther King Jr.
George Washington Carver
Bessie Coleman
Edna Lewis
Ruby Bridges
Rosa Parks
Wilma Rudolph
Jesse Owens
Jackie Robinson

Lastly, this unit has another feature to extend your students' learning experience! There are writing prompts to accompany the reading passages that focus on connecting the reader to the Black History Great. This Text-to-Self Connection will further their learning about the focus person and let them know that they can be a "Great" someday too! These are perfect for copying onto the back of the passages for extra practice. There is an area they can illustrate their writing also.

Please see the preview for all that is included in this must-have, Black History unit!
