I trained and taught at a Paideia school for ten years and love how seminar can be used to generate dialogue among all students in my class. Students who are proficient in seminar skills consistently meet the Speaking and Listening Common Core Standards. We always review out seminar rules and set a class and personal goal before starting.
This particular plan was written to go along with my Paideia Project on Leadership (I'll be posting this soon, if you're interested). You will need a copy of The Story of Ruby Bridges. Questions can be altered to meet your own individual group needs.
This Socratic seminar plan includes:
* pre- and post-seminar activity ideas
* opening, core and closing questions
If would be helpful if you had:
* the text from the book typed up
* copies available for students to refer to during the seminar.
This will aid in their ability to closely read and cite evidence.
