This writing packet includes final draft paper for the following historical figures: Martin Luther King, Jr., Abraham Lincoln, Rosa Parks, Ruby Bridges, and Barack Obama. Each figure's portrait is at the top of the first page, with lines for writing. The second page contains lines for writing, as well as an additional picture of the historical figure that details his or her contribution to Black History. I use them with my RTII and special needs students during Black History Month to teach them how to read non-fiction passages and write bibliographies. We read the Scholastic and National Geographic "Easy Reader" biographies on each historical figures, discuss their accomplishments and contributions to Black History, and write a multi-paragraph essay about each figure. We usually write a few essays together, and then I allow them to choose a figure to write for their final independent essay. I usually use their writing to create a Black History Month bulletin board during the month of February.
