Description
****A 50 Top Best Seller****
This is by far my favorite and I had a blast creating it (and learned a lot also!) Inspired by the most adorable clip art from Melonheadz, this Famous Folks of Black History unit has a whopping 152 pages, my largest product! It focuses on the following African-American Heroes:
Ruby Bridges-First Student to Desegregate a School
Martin Luther King Jr.-Civil Rights Activist
Frederick Douglass-Civil Rights Activist
Jesse Owens-Olympic Track and Field Record Holder
Jackie Robinson-Major League Baseball Player
Harriet Tubman-Civil Rights/Women's Rights Activist, Underground Railroad Conductor, Abolitionist, Civil War Spy & Nurse (You Go Girl!
Phillis Wheatley-Poet
Thurgood Marshall-US Supreme Court Justice
George Washington Carver-Scientist/Inventor
Benjamin Banneker-Astronomer/Scientist/Almanac Publisher
To make use of the wonderful clip art in the unit, I provided a HUGE full-page timeline that utilizes each hero's illustration and date card. There is a smaller version for those of us with limited wall space. There is a short bio card for each that highlights their major life accomplishments (and teacher cheat sheet!). Each Famous Folk has an illustrated, informational text passage that is a page long. To provide variety for all teachers, there is a form of a Thinking Map for each hero~Bubble, Tree, Circle, KWL, and Venn Diagram. There are numerous comprehension activities: ABC Order, Matching, and Word Searches. Also included are a set of vocabulary cards to be used for a word wall...There's a word sort and Write the Room activity that can be used with the cards. There are three Bulletin Board Kits, that utilize the most adorable fonts I've come across and provided for you (You can view it in the downloadable preview). One board is made after MLK and has the students make Dream Mobiles with realistic cloud lettering. The second is a set of lettering for an overall Famous Folks of Black History Board, featuring tribal print. The last board is a replica of the Famous Folk Bio Cards and has the students make their own Bio Cards. There is a coloring book with a page for each hero. Also you'll find in this product is a Making Words Center with sparkly glitter letters. And lastly there is an craftivity in which students create their own American Superhero, which can also be made into a bulletin board and comes complete with a class book and several types of writing/picture pages for compositions. I've provided you with a cover letter and 4 pages of thoughts and notes for implementation.
I'm sure you'll find this product very useful for Black History Month and it will last longer than one month, as all the Famous Folks highlighted are worthy of! This is my favorite product and I'm sure you'll see all the academic and character benefits of implementing it. PLEASE download the preview to see what you'll be receiving!
