This unit of study for Black History Month is engaging with it's different activities. To start, students go on a hunt to find short bios that match the people we will be talking about. Students fill out a sheet and have it checked to see if they are right. The first 3 people to get them all correct get an advantage-first choice of the person they will research. After the first 3 people have "won", we go over the bios and students select who they will research. This research leads to a character sketch in which students must use 3-5 character traits to describe their figure and his/her contributions. The last part of this unit is a collage that students create. I have always done it for the people we have talked about, but another idea is to do it for the whole of black history month-pictures that represent what BHM means.
