Solomon Northup, His Life and Times is designed as a multi-purpose informational reading and writing assignment unit for upper elementary students. It can be utilized equally in an ELA class or a Social Studies class. The four texts are continuous but do not have to be done all at once - they could be assigned as the teacher wishes: in class over 1-4 days, as homework assignments, an independent projects, etc. Three of the one-page text begins with a “before you read” question”, each one has a page of questions (inference, factual, and opinion) as well as a page of vocabulary and grammar work. Each text has a short creative writing assignment.
The four texts are: Who was Solomon Northup?, Freedom Lost, Life as a Slave, and A Free Man Once More. Each one is between 280-300 words in length.
The texts are original work of mine and are based on the original narrative as told to David Wilson by Solomon Northup in 1853. I have read the narrative in its entirety (I recommend it!).
