Product Description

This resource includes 15 (5 opinion, 5 informative, 5 narrative) Black History writing prompts, 13 attached passages/video links, revising/editing checklists & color-coding charts for each writing type. Prompts are provided in 4 formats (see Preview for examples). Prompts reference one or more attached passages or linked videos.

A BLACK HISTORY MONTH-Complete ReadingPacket-NO PREP packet is also availablein the Moxie Magnolia store that goes right along with this writing resource allowing you to do an entire ELA Reading/Writing Black History Unit!

Organization

The document has been organized into the three Common Core State Standards (CCSS) Writing strand standards: opinion writing (W1), informative writing (W2), and narrative writing (W3). Five writing prompts are available for each standard. Each prompt requires reference to one or more attached passages and/or video links. This allows you to meet all CCSS writing strands while teaching and analyzing history at the same time!

What’s Included

· Prompts are provided in four formats:

o Prompt Pages (all prompts on one page)

o Prose of the Week (students go through the entire writing process doing one step at a time)

o Prompt With Lines (students read prompt and respond on lines)

o PowerPoint (project prompt on the board and students respond in their notebooks-saves paper!)

· Revising and editing checklists for each type of writing are also included.

Prompts are on a variety of levels, so you may decide to have all students write to the same prompt, or you may decide to differentiate by giving different prompts to different students based on ability level. Prompts are listed from easiest to hardest.

You can use these as creative writing opportunities or to teach writing. I personally have my students color-code their writing by underlining certain required elements in different colors. The kids like doing this, and it is very effective because it is a hands-on way of having them revise their work while allowing me to see which students don’t understand how to effectively incorporate those elements. Suggested color-code charts are included.

This packet is easy, easy, EASY to use because everything you need is there...all you have to do is print and go!

Click the "Preview" button to see a sample of the formats included as well as MOST of the product (I like for people to know what they are buying!).

This can be used as Morning Work, for homework, during Writing class time, Social Studies time, or for a substitute. It can be used over and over again each year. It’s a great way to efficiently use the limited amount of class time we have to teach writing skills AND history at the same time!
