Integrate the history and culture of Black Canadians into your program with these great any time of the year! Many of the picture books were written by Canadian authors or feature Canadian settings and characters. I’ve included some popular picture books about African Americans and some of my favourite fables and folktales.

A comprehension check is included for each book for students to recount facts from the story and/or do some inferring. The comprehension checks are best suited for students in grades 2-3. There is also a response page for each book. They are best suited for grades 1-2.

Some of these picture books are available in French. For these books, I quickly created a Google Slides version with editable text for French teachers to translate. Because it was quickly thrown together, it is not ideal, but it's an option for the time being.
