This was such an engaging addition to our Black History study! This PowerPoint and accompanying activity outlines the lives and accomplishments of 10 iconic African-American musicians in the United States. It covers different music styles and goes in chronological order-- from Scott Joplin to Michael Jackson!
21-page slideshow of the musicians, including music samples
7-page "record" craftivity booklet
This package is geared toward elementary-age students. The explanations of the artists' lives are simplified in order to help students of this age understand. The 10 artists were chosen as people who represented certain musical styles throughout history-- there are many others that could have been included, but for the sake of simplicity, these are the ones featured:
Michael Jackson and the Jackson 5
Included in the presentation are music samples. The kids loved being able to sample the music, and in some cases, see the artists perform! I even broke out my own record player and played a few records for them.
The music samples are not my own-- they are all from YouTube.
For the record book activity, I recommend printing the pages double-sided, portrait syle, flipping on the long edge. Cut out and staple with black construction paper as the cover, and it looks like a record!
To play the music samples, click "Enable content" on the slideshow and double-click on the video. It'll start to load and will soon display a play button for you to click on.
