This novel study guide takes an in-depth look into the CCSS Text Exemplar novel "Black Ships Before Troy" by Rosemary Sutcliff. Designed as a chapter by chapter accompaniment, this study guide goes well beyond basic vocabulary and comprehension questions, with specific emphasis on the strategies and techniques most effective when reading complex text. In addition to monitoring their own comprehension as they read the novel, students will analyze vocabulary within context, cite textual evidence as they analyze characters, and explore key questions that ask them to make inferences about the text and explore deeper ethical issues. Questions can then be used in Socratic Circles or Philosophical Chair activities to add even more depth and complexity within the novel study. Includes a character chart for student use.
