This is a nonfiction study of an Outside Online article about Mt. Everest's deadliest climbing season. This unit plan includes pre-reading questions, five sets of questions for the article (selected response, constructed response, and performance events), supplemental reading questions, and a perspective-taking exercise. This unit plan is perfect for students to springboard discussions and could be used as an introduction to a project-based learning unit about Mt. Everest. I have used this material with 11th and 12th grade special education students in a modified ELA course. Please be sure to preview the article the questions cover, as some language may not be appropriate for some students. I have not included an answer key, as my students and I find that multiple answers are correct based on textual evidence and that traditional answer keys are too limiting.
