This FREE slideshow is used to present & get students eager to do a research project. The Essential Question is, “Why, in 2016, is there a need for a movement like Black Lives Matter?”
The slideshow includes questions, discussion starters, images, video clips, and activity ideas to get students excited about the research. After a couple of days discussing racism, in general, we read an article about environmental racism re: Hurricane Katrina. It explains a clear perspective as to how African-Americans have felt since Katrina about their place in American society. In my class, we read this article together and I would stop to show video clips (included in this slideshow) after certain parts.
After 3-5 days of pre-unit work, students spent about 5 days researching.
I've created 5 different Case Studies/Research Packets:
Environmental Racism - Case Study: Hurricane Katrina
Environmental Racism - Case Study: Flint Water Crisis
Police Killings of Unarmed African-Americans
#BlackLivesMatter: Understanding its beginning, mission, and work
For each packet I’ve laid out the research process in steps; each step includes hyperlinks to videos and articles, questions to look for when watching and reading, as well as a writing task at the end. You can choose to buy all 5 Research Packets for $19.95 or individually for $5.95.
HOW MY STUDENTS DID THIS: I created the Research Packets in Google Docs and shared them with students. That way, each student had their own copy and were able to click the links and write their evidence right in Google Docs. If you like, I can SHARE the GOOGLE DOC(S) with you after you’ve downloaded the .pdfs. Just email me at email@example.com with your request!
I teach at a school with a very diverse population. ALL of my students REALLY got into this unit. It created a lot of great discussion and engagement! Their Public Service Announcements turned out pretty fabulous, too.
