3 Ways To Play!
How To Play Using the Spinner:
Students spin the spinner. They put that many Earth (or Moon or Sun) pieces on the ten frame. Then determine how many more are needed to make 10. Count that many Moon (or Sun/other Moon) pieces to fill the ten frame. Record the sentence on the number sentence template (or if you prefer, give students a blank piece of copy paper to record their findings). Students can also find the composing/decomposing number sentence to match their picture (work mat)/number sentence they wrote.
How To Play Using the Cards:
Students select a card. They use playing pieces to show the number sentence on that card. They can use the number sentence template to re-write the sentence. Continue play until all cards have been selected/shown.
Alternate Play (can do 1:1, small group in a center, partner work for a whole group lesson, etc):
Tell students a ‘story’ (word problem) and have them determine the answer by using the work mat and playing pieces.
Ex. There are 4 moons in the rocket. How many more suns need to come in to fill it up (or make 10)?
Fun to use at any time during the year because it is not 'seasonally' themed!
