This is the perfect game to add to your collection to help students build their phonemic awareness skills. Students will segment and blend words while having fun playing a game. There are 112 picture cards and include a huge variety of images. This game is easy to differentiate depending on your learners by using the variations listed below.
How to play:
Print, cut and laminate all of the pieces. Choose how many firefly cards you want to use. There are a huge variety to choose from.
Lay all of the fireflies out. Each student needs a jar. The teacher (or student) needs to choose a picture and segment the sounds. Students blend the word back together and find the picture. The first to ‘catch’ the firefly, puts it in their jar.
- Go around the circle so each students gets a turn at catching a firefly.
- The person who catches the firefly chooses the next word to segment.
- After students catch their firefly, they segment and blend the word again.
- After students catch their firefly, the can say how many sounds are in the word.
You can have a different phonemic awareness skill focus and ask students to identify the beginning or ending sound in the word.
If students are struggling blending the word back together, do it for them. Segment the word and then blend it and get the student to repeat after you.
If students are more advanced, you can use more words to describe the picture. For example; th-e b-l-a-ck a-n-t. Students have to blend more than one word to find the correct picture.
This game is the perfect addition to your literacy or reading group activities.
