Description

Here is a set of 73 word lists (3-4 words in each list) designed to support beginning or struggling readers as they learn to decode long vowel words with the vowel-consonant-e pattern in kindergarten, first, and second grade.

I have included a minimal color set and a black/ white one. Each word list has three or four words with the same vowel.

There is a key word picture for the vowel pattern and sound at the top of each list to assist your students with letter-sound correspondence. There is a dot below each letter (or digraph), but not the silent e.

Students will touch each dot and say the sound that the letter or letters represent(s). Then, they will blend the sounds together to read the word as they sweep their finger along the arrow.

There is a one-page Handy Helper reference chart, in color and black/ white, with key word pictures for consonant and consonant digraphs.

This easy to prepare resource includes 48 a-e (a-consonant-e) words without consonant blends and digraphs, 6 with consonant digraphs, and 36 with consonant blends; 3 e-e words without consonant blends and digraphs, and 4 with consonant blends and digraphs; 42 i-e words without consonant blends and digraphs, 6 with consonant digraphs, and 20 with consonant blends; 36 o-e words without consonant blends and digraphs, 3 with consonant digraphs, and 16 with consonant blends; 15 u-e words without consonant blends and digraphs, and 4 with consonant blends.

I have not included words with: soft c or g, s as z, qu, three-letter consonant blends, or silent consonants. I have included both common and less common words. Each set of lists generally starts with more common words.

Use these word lists in your small guided, intervention, and resource groups.
