Use this free blending board to build word families. It has all the beginning blends on it and a reminder about when to use c and when to use k for the beginning /k/ sound per Orton Gillingham's Cat and Kite rule. I use this to extend word study using word sort words (Words Their Way/Word Journeys) in Letter Name and Within Word Pattern. Fold over the beginning sound (onset) of a word in the word sort and place the rhyme (middle and ending pattern/word family) next to each beginning blend on the board. Have students say each word they make out loud as they move the rhyme from onset to onset until they come to a familiar real word. Have them write down the word they make under the correct heading for word study. If you follow a chunk spelling routine, this is a good resource too to build short words. You can print out the rhyme chunks and have students cut them up, or you can have students write down the rhyme on a small piece of paper for really low prep. I have a complete Word Study Menu and How To Manual that contains this resource to support an entire year's worth of word study activities also in my store. Check it out! Let me know if you need the editable version.
