Your emergent readers need a lot of practice blending CVC words together. And if you ever had reluctant boys like I have, simply sticking "Matchbox Car" in their hands works wonders. These CVC word mats are programmed with each short vowel in the middle race car and your students simply have to put a consonant in the first and third cars to make new words. So this product includes a card for each short vowel: a, e, i, o, and u. Also included you will find several blank mats for students to create CVC words without any suggestions.
I simply print out the cards and laminate them. Also, I have included all you need to have your students create a mini book so he/she can record the words made. Simply add a pile of magnetic letters, a dry erase marker, and matchbox cars. Your student starts by putting a consonant on the green (go) car picture, followed by the yellow car, and finally the red car (stop). This helps your new reader focus on left to right progression. And to further enhance that understanding, there will be a green star near the start of the word boxes. Once letters are in the correct word boxes, he/she can take a toy car and drive it across the road from left to right while blending the word.
