Give each student a set of the cut out alphabet letters. Say the sound of each letter the students will need, one at a time (teacher created word list CVC). When students hear each sound they find the letter needed and place the letter on the correct blank space on the making words mat.
Extend the lesson by directing students to change one letter of the word to create a new word.
Recognize that spoken words are represented in written language by specific sequences of letters.
Understand that words are separated by spaces in print.
Write a letter or letters for most consonant and short-vowel sounds (phonemes).
Spell simple words phonetically, drawing on knowledge of sound-letter relationships.
