This Power Point presentation includes 50 cvc nonsense words (ten words per vowel), plus a few challenge words. It’s broken into two sections: one for blending phonemes into words, and one for reading whole words.
Begin slide show mode.
As each slide comes up, a cvc word will appear, one letter at a time. Students respond with the sound of each letter as it appears, and then blend the sounds into a word. When practicing whole words, the entire word will appear at once.
A click of the mouse will advance the slide show to the next word.
You can use the slide sorter (click VIEW on the task bar) to customize the order the words appear. You may want to group them or mix them up based on your students’ or curricular needs.
I introduce this activity whole class, but it would also work well in small groups, or even one-on-one.
As we practice and review, my kids love to make it competitive. We divide into two teams, with each taking turns blending a word. (If you’ve already played as part of a lesson, few students should trouble reading them.) I have 100% engagement—everyone wants to read the word their team, and also make sure the other team reads accurately.
