This is a phonemic awareness "ring thing" you can use to practice blending and segmenting phonemes in whole or small group. There are 12 pages of cards covering words from 2 sounds up to 6 sounds. I laminate them, punch a hole in the upper left corner, and put them on a 1" binder ring. I start by giving students the phonemes and asking them to blend the words. I move up to giving students the word and asking them to tell me how many phonemes.
I often use a manipulative to help students blend and count the phonemes. My favorite (because it is easy to manage) is to take a 4 inch piece of yarn and string 6 pony beads on it. I tie a knot at each end large enough to keep the students from pulling beads off. Students are able to move beads back and forth on the string to represent the sounds in the words.
