Reading Success At Your Fingertips!
This is one of twelve phonological awareness skill mini-lessons we have created for you! These are so easy to use with little preparation… simply download, print, bind together, and keep at your fingertips! Each mini-lesson is ready to use with your students during a planned lesson or as a 5-15 minute activity! Each activity provides many examples to choose from, so there's not need to think of words off the top-of-your-head. AND…these can be used repeatedly to review and secure ten of the most important phonemic awareness skills children need to become successful readers!

We suggest initially using the mini-lessons with the students as a group – having the students answer in unison. Then ask individual students to respond – based the needs unique to your classroom.

Be sure to check out all twelve of our Phonological Awareness mini-lessons. Each lesson focuses on a separate phonemic awareness skill, including:
(TSW...The student will)
Digraphs - TSW recognize digraphs in a word
Blends - TSW recognize blends in a word
Phoneme Identity – TSW recognize the same sounds in different words
Phoneme Isolation – TSW recognize individual sounds in a word
Phoneme Deletion – TSW recognize the word that remains when a phoneme is removed from a word
Phoneme Blending - TSW listen to a sequence of separately spoken phonemes, and combine the phonemes to form a word
Phoneme Substitution - TSW substitute one phoneme for another to make a new word
Phoneme Addition - TSW make a new word by adding a phoneme(s) to an existing word
Phoneme Categorization – TSW recognize the word in a set of three or four words that has the "odd" sound
Phoneme Segmentation – TSW break a word into its separate sounds, saying each sound as they tap out or count it
Rhyme Oddity - TSW listen to spoken words and identify words that rhyme
Compound Words - TSW identify compound words

Have fun with these phonemic awareness activities to help your kindergarteners or beginning first-grade students begin to develop a lifelong enjoyment of language and reading, so they will become a successful reader!
