Product Description
This set of beginning and ending blends read and write our classroom centers includes two differentiated sets of 88 word cards that are great for literacy centers or word work stations!

The first set of cards includes pictures and written words for students to decode and copy.

The second set has dashes in place of the beginning blends needed to spell each word. Students must look at each picture, determine the beginning blend, and write the full word.

Corresponding pictures give meaning to the words as students write them. This makes them great vocabulary builders for all students, and especially for those learning English as a second language.

Between 15 and 21 word cards and a recording sheet are included for each of the following blend sets: beginning l blends, beginning r blends, ending blends (mp, lt, ld, lk, lf, ft), ending n blends, and s blends (beginning and ending). All the words chosen are beginning reader friendly, with all but a few following a CCVC, CVCC, or CCVCe format.

A mixed practice recording sheet is also included should you wish to have students decode, write, and circle the blends using cards from more than one set. This is great for review!

Two options for each recording sheet, one with handwriting lines and one with regular lines, are also provided. Choose the version that best meets your students’ needs.

These cards can be used in a variety of ways. In my own second grade classroom, I use them during my small group center rotations at the beginning of the week, when the weekly phonics and spelling skill is still new. I tape the cards around the classroom, give each student in the center group a clipboard, and send them on a silent scavenger hunt to find, read, and write each word on their recording sheets. There is also space at the bottom of each recording sheet for students to practice writing a sentence or two using the words. This activity could also be done as a whole-class scoot game.
