This is a photographic reference of patterns created from a basic unit block set. It can be used in the block area as a free choice activity, or within a small group setting to work on perception, coordination, and to increase development of spatial awareness. This particular set is a varied compilation with many symmetrical, asymmetrical, and complex patterns. It can be used in a preschool setting, but the advanced patterns are excellent for school-age children. Discussions regarding symmetry are easily prompted due to the varied patterns available. I use the set in the classroom with children from preschool to 5th grade, along with a set of blocks. It could be used without the blocks for older children to compare patterns and determine symmetrical designs.
This set can be printed on heavy paper and bound for extended use, or the patterns can be cut out and used as a card set. Ample space is provided at the top of each page to allow for easy book-making.
