This hands-on activity introduces students to composite 3D shapes by allowing them to build as many shapes as they can with only 5 cubes, and the corresponding surface area for each shape. In addition, students are given practice in drawing a shape from different perspectives: top, bottom, front, back and the sides. Students are further challenged to find the surface area of shapes consisting of exactly 10 cubes.
Help build critical thinking in your classroom and spatial awareness with this engaging activity that are aligned with Common Core State Standards.
This surface area activity bundle includes:
- Sheet for building shapes with 5 cubes
- Reflection questions for 5 cubes
- Sheet for building shapes with 10 cubes
- Reflection questions for 10 cubes
- Answer key for both sheets
