This attractive and engaging 12-page mini-unit about the science and math behind the forensics of blood spatter analysis, heavily involving numeracy and literacy, will be enjoyed by students from year 7 and up. Students learn about blood spatter analysis, conduct their own experiments and analyse their own data.

A cover page, a “Blood Facts” sheet, a double-sided worksheet to go with the fact sheet (“Bloody Math”), word search, vocabulary activity, a Blood Spatter Analysis fact sheet and worksheet, a crime scene investigation writing prompt, two experiments with homemade fake blood and lastly a fun maze worksheet to wind down the unit.
Instructions for use
I would recommend teaching this mini unit over two-three lessons, or for a whole day of teaching. You could introduce this unit as a twist on Valentine’s Day, or it could be used to wrap up a unit on blood/forensics. Read through the dossier and prepare the necessary ingredients for the experiment. Then print off a copy for each student! It would be best to print in colour, but if printed in black and white, each graphic is still readable.
