Blood Type Punnett Squares is an activity to help students understand how blood types develop from parents to children! This activity is meant for students who already have a good understanding of the basic 4 square punnett square and are ready to move on to more challenging ones.

This activity is one of a few punnett square activities I will be uploading soon.

With 10 different "Steps" you have the freedom to split this activity however you like! In the "How to Use" page, I give three different examples on ways I would use the assignment with my own students. From a whole class seated activity, to students sitting with a partner, or roaming around the room in stations, the choice is yours!

All of the "steps" have a specific punnett square pre-made for it, designated by their number to help students stay organized. All they have to do is write the blood types and fill in the letters!

Blood types A and B typically have variations, but I reduced that headache by saying if the are BB or BO, and AA or AO.

I originally made this activity as we were learning about genetics and my students wanted to learn about blood types- I wasn't planning on teaching them about it! When a student (or an entire class of them) come to you and say, "I want to learn more about this," how can you say no?

I know my students were engaged and loved it, and I hope yours will be too!

Emphasis is on synthesizing information from reliable sources about the influence of humans on genetic outcomes in artificial selection (such as genetic modification, animal husbandry, gene therapy); and, on the impacts these technologies have on society as well as the technologies leading to these scientific discoveries.

Develop and use a model to describe why asexual reproduction results in offspring with identical genetic information and sexual reproduction results in offspring with genetic variation. Emphasis is on using models such as Punnett squares, diagrams, and simulations to describe the cause and effect relationship of gene transmission from parent(s) to offspring and resulting genetic variation.
NGSSMS-LS3-1
Develop and use a model to describe why structural changes to genes (mutations) located on chromosomes may affect proteins and may result in harmful, beneficial, or neutral effects to the structure and function of the organism. Emphasis is on conceptual understanding that changes in genetic material may result in making different proteins. Assessment does not include specific changes at the molecular level, mechanisms for protein synthesis, or specific types of mutations.
