This is an anticipation guide (part of my Blood on the River novel unit)
based on Elisa Carbone's historical fiction novel Blood on the River. It will help students use prior knowledge and knowledge of Jamestown history to make predictions before they begin reading, which will create interest and aid comprehension.
This one-page activity contains ten statements with which students may agree or disagree, and I highly recommend letting them share and defend their answers, even before reading! This way they are more invested in their answers and will read carefully to look for confirmation. There are columns for before-reading predictions and after-reading checks, as well as space for students' own creative predictions.
This is a great introduction activity for a novel unit!
As a bonus, I've included three pages of general Jamestown preview activities - a KWL chart, a brainstorm/brain dump page, and a word scramble with relevant terms. I hope these engaging activities will get your students good and excited to read Blood on the River!
