Students can explore the importance of blubber and how it works by doing a blubber experiment. This page is to accompany the actual experiment.
Place shortening in a baggie. Then another bag inside of that allowing students to place their hand inside without getting shortening on their hand. Then the baggies with their hand in it goes into a bucket of cold water. The results: students hands remain at normal temperature (not cold) because of the shortening/fat in the bag- much like a penguin (or any another with blubber) is better able to handle the cold water or cold climate around them.
