PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This packet can be used with the Next Generation Science Standard (NGSS) for Kindergarten: Interdependent Relationships in Ecosystems: Animals, Plants, & their Environment:
K-LS1-1:
Use observations to describe patterns of what plants and animals (including humans) need to survive.

How do marine mammals stay warm in the freezing cold ocean? Blubber! Use the first 6 slides of this packet to discuss blubber with your class: slides show mammals that have blubber (seal, whale, dolphins, walrus). I project these onto my classroom white board as an intro to this unit.

-Do the follow-up worksheet entitled “How Do Ocean Mammals Stay Warm?” where students must circle the correct pictures.

-Do a blubber experiment: create a blubber glove using Crisco vegetable shortening (to represent blubber) and 2 plastic gallon bags. Let students put their hand in ice water with and without the glove – they will see first hand why marine mammals can swim in the Arctic Ocean! Follow up worksheet and photos included. The blubber glove last forever - I've used the same one year after year, I keep it in my classroom refrigerator!

-Learn about toothed and baleen whale anatomy then make a whale out of a Dixie cup, patterns included.

-Whale facts sheet and 2 worksheets “Parts of a Toothed Whale” and “Parts of a Baleen Whale” included.
