My GATE students loved this engaging lesson! It was a real challenge for my 3rd graders and right on target for my 4th and 5th graders. If you want your GATE kids to finally have to WORK to find an answer, this is for you! I think this would also work well in the regular 6th or 7th grade classroom.
Instructions and recommendations for using this lesson are included.
1. Research and record measurements around their home to get a realistic idea for the measurements of their dream room.
2. Choose an appropriate scale to draw their blueprint, pick room dimensions and items to include in their room, and calculate the blueprint dimensions according to the scale they choose.
3. Draw the room and items on graph paper according to scale.
I assigned part 1 for homework, and part 2 and 3 were completed in about an hour in class. There are plenty of ways you could extend this activity into a full project!
