In this lab project students will master their boat building skills as they compete with their peers to engineer a boat that will be designed to float as many golf balls as possible. This won't be as easy as they think though, because each group has to 'purchase' materials as they go and build their boats based off a strict budget.
In order to be successful they need to understand Archimedes' Principle, the relationship between buoyant force and gravity, how to balance a budget, how to design and engineer their boat and successfully construct their boat all within the guidelines of the lab.
This project usually takes about 2 weeks to finish from start to finish. Everything is included in this lab outline except the materials needed to construct the boats.
