Bobby the Brave (Sometimes) Novel Study
You want your kids reading authentic just right chapter books. You want them to have choice in what they are reading. My students choose a lot of their own books to read during just right reading. Although they are reading books at their level, and they have their nose in the book the whole time, how do I really know that they are reading? Yes, I’ve taught them to analyze the characters' traits, look for tension, and to build ideas for the themes of the story. They are writing on post its, writing long from a post it, and writing reading responses, but how do I know they are doing high level thinking and analyzing if I haven’t read the book? I don’t have time to read all these books!
This book guide is a guide to the book perhaps your students are reading individually or in partnerships. Included are short gists on what each chapter is about as well as a few questions per chapter you can ask the student as you pull up a chair for a quick 3 minute conference depending on where they are in the book. The questions include the answers. By using them you will know if the student is understanding the book, and also if they are using high level thinking as they read. You can use the questions for individual conferences, partnership conferences or even book clubs. You have to know what’s happening in the book, you have to know what questions to ask to lift the level of thinking, and this guide provides you that ability without ever having read the book!
