Product Description

This 2nd grade science resource has two art craft activities that will develop your students' skills to create a model representing shapes and kinds of bodies of water.  Your students will be engaged when you use art during science to meet the standard regarding bodies of water. You may have disliked science but teach the next generation of students to love science using meaningful engaging standard based activities plus a bit of art.

Introduction Activity:

Students will use play dough or clay to recreate shapes shown in pictures that are included in your download. Don't tell the students that they are creating an ocean, gulf, and a river as well as learning the differences between a lake and a pond. Let them have fun doing the "art" activity. Students will then draw the shapes so that they can refer back to them as they learn about bodies of water. Students might not even have guessed that these “art” activities have anything to do with bodies of water. So follow up with a discussion in which the real focus will be confirmed and students can share their knowledge and experiences with bodies of water. Their vocabulary can be broadened as students draw upon their background experiences to discuss shallow ponds, meandering rivers, deep oceans, etc.

Your students have been introduced through this activity and may be curious to learn more about bodies of water. Now you can teach your own lessons from your unit.

But there’s more.

Concluding Activity:

Students will draw a map with at least 3 types of water. Need a rubric for grading? One is included to support students during the drawing process, to use as a self-evaluation and/or your own assessment to obtain a grade for you grade book.

Keep the "art" craft theme going and increase the fun by having students color a ship to move around in the bodies of water using a magnet on a popsicle stick. Learning about bodies of water can be educational and fun.

Writing Activities:

I didn’t forget how important it is to use writing to help students review and remember learned information.

  • Give the included lined page to your students and have them write directions to guide the ship. Your students can include temporal words to show the sequence of events for the ship.
  • The provided writing paper can also be used to extend the water theme across the curriculum. Three additional ideas are included involving word work, definition writing, and creative writing. These activities might be skills you need to teach as well.

This resource provides engaging hands-on activities to supplement your lessons:

  1. The introduction ART activity helps students see the visual differences between bodies of water.
  2. The concluding CRAFT activity helps students show what they have learned by drawing bodies of water. A rubric makes grading a breeze.
  3. The WRITING activity paper has students developing their writing skills as well.

Two pages of “Teacher Tips” with photos are provided to help guide you through the prep as well as the teaching.

Additional supplies needed might be things you already have in your classroom or in your science supplies:

  • play dough or clay
  • blue and green paper
  • round magnets
  • mounting putty
  • popsicle sticks
  • oval platter size paper plates

Science can be fun….and your artistic, creative students will be loving these activities.
