This project-based activity allows groups of students to engage in multiple operations with fractions. Students will multiply 1/4 of each ingredient required to make a trail mix recipe. Once they have calculated 1/4 of the recipe, students will their calculations to get a sum for their recipe. They will then divide their sum by five, the determine the total amount of trail mix that five people will be able to enjoy. The division is done using the area model. This review of fraction operations and focus on the 6th grade standard of modeling fractions is a WONDERFUL way to engage students in a hands-on learning experience they will alway remember.
