Students will practice computing the bond energies of chemical bonds for diatomic molecules given the wavelength of light that breaks the chemical bond. This will help familiarize students with the following relationships:
wavelength and frequency for light
frequency and energy using Plank's constant
avogadro's number to compute the energy of the bond on a per mole basis
This activity will also reinforce the idea that different pairings of atoms form chemical bonds of differing strengths.
