Included is a student handout detailing expectations and examples for writing a story or poem about bones and the skeletal system. I require students to use 15-20 terms and/or facts, but have left blanks for you to decide how many you would like your students to include. I do not give class time for this assignment, but may give them 4-5 days to complete it on their own. If you allow extra credit, this could also be used for that purpose.
Students generally enjoy the creativity this assignment allows. The hardest part for them is, of course, starting out; you will have to provide guidance to those who seem overwhelmed. (A story seems to be easier for them than a poem.) Although the examples rhyme, I stress to students that this is not necessary. I also tell students they cannot list more than two bones in the same sentence. You could also collaborate with an English teacher and have students write haiku or limericks using skeletal facts or terms.
