Students write their opinion and support and then glue the card inside of the easy to assemble "envelope". Copy on construction paper the paper for the "envelope". The seal is copied on red construction paper and glued to the top of the folded paper envelope so that it is not sealed. When students share their awards, they simply open up the flap. The envelopes and illustrated book covers make a cute bulletin board display.
You can assign categories to students or you can use a class voting system to choose overall winners. I let each of my students what they wanted to give an award for and then videoed them presenting their awards. The class loved watching and cheering for each other as they presented. The video will be played at Open House.
There are 2 posters you can use for a board display or a black and white banner to hang with your award envelope display.
This activity gave my students an opportunity to critically look at why a book was their favorite. We had good discussions. This was a memorable book activity for my class.
