Even though I don’t like saying “book report”, I will say that a blog can be used as a book report of the digital age. It works well because students love anything that relates to the computer and social media, so it makes the assignment fun and relevant to them. Also, the publication aspect of it encourages students to make sure they are putting their best product out there because it’s not just for their teacher or classmates but the world.
I had my seventh grade class create blog posts for each of the books they read in seventh grade. That was four class books and three literature circle books, so seven blogs total over the course of the year. It was an eighteen-point summative assessment that I did in conjunction with a test and/or corresponding writing assignment. This download includes reading blog instructions, a blog summary outline, a rubric, and an in-class workday reminder SMART notebook. There are a lot of various blogging sites out there, so find one that you think fits best in your classroom.
