Book boxes are a creative way for students to think about symbolism, character, theme, plot, etc. In this activity, students will select 8 items to place in a box that represent something in the novel (4 items must be made by hand). Then, students decorate the outside of the box to match the novel and add other information to the box such as themes, character list, and author. Students either write paragraphs to explain their choices of objects or present their box to the class or both.
This free lesson has information for the teacher, instructions and rubric sheet for the students to follow, and example pictures with paragraph explanations.
The instructions and rubric handout also come in an editable PowerPoint so that you can change anything you wish to fit the needs of your students.
