Book Character Day/World Book Day Activities and Costume Planning

INTRODUCTION

Book Character Day or World Book Day is a fun way to promote a love of reading to your students.

On the day, involve your students in activities related to book characters and character traits. The included activities give you days worth of activities to use before, on and after the day. Don’t let Book Character Day be only a fancy dress parade.

This pack of resources will help your students think about:

•which character they will choose to dress up as and why

•get to know their chosen character and its traits

•plan how they can make their costume

•their final costume and reflect on what they could have done differently.

CCSS Reading Standards

RL.1.3: Describe characters, settings, and major events in a story, using key details.

RL.2.3: Describe how characters in a story respond to major events and challenges.

RL.3.3: Describe characters in a story (e.g., their traits, motivations, or feelings) and explain how their actions contribute to the sequence of events.

RL.4.3: Describe in depth a character, setting, or event in a story or drama, drawing on specific details in the text (e.g., a character's thoughts, words, or actions).
